This paper looks at the changing nature of universities resulting from the social and economic changes of the past two decades. These changes to Australian universities, both the traditional universities and those created from amalgamations of post-secondary institutions such as Colleges of Advanced Education (CAEs), resulted in their involvement in post-secondary education and training beyond the traditional role as providers of liberal education. The author suggests that the changed role of universities along with the marked reduction in government funding has led to a situation where there is a demonstrable need for increasing interactions with other education and training providers, industry and the wider professional community in the provision of higher education. In this paper the author addresses the way in which the skills and professional training required of vocational education can be accommodated within a university education, illustrated by a particular case study from within the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA).
