In this paper the author intends to provide a clear picture of the current vocational training discussion in Germany. The current vocational training sector in Germany is reviewed including general education, continuing vocational training, the dual system and the long-term acceptance of the dual system within the employment system. However, the author suggests that lifelong learning for all, and development of the content and structure of vocational training including its two components, initial and continuing vocational training, are central elements of current educational reform elements in Germany. In order to uphold the principle of lifelong learning in all areas of education a common orientation in training, the workplace and continuing training is required, as well as changes in and stronger links between all learning sites including informal learning outside traditional learning institutions.
