This paper provides an overview of Australia's vocational education and training (VET) system and looks at aspects of recent reforms in the sector including the direction in which Australia will need to take these reforms in the future. The overview describes the roles and responsibilities of the Federal and State and Territory governments and the Federal government's vision for VET. Topics briefly reviewed include: New Apprenticeships; user choice; incentives; the national training framework; training packages; VET in schools; equity in VET; lifelong learning; and flexible delivery. The paper concludes by looking at future directions VET provision in Australia could take.
