This study on the management of university-industry relations describes the process of developing a new organisational structure within the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) for the support of technology transfer to the productive sector. The Centre for Technological Innovation (CIT) was established in order to promote scientific research results for their use in productive activities. The case study begins with a brief historical background, an overview of the university, and its role in Mexico's higher education system and the development of research capacity. The following chapters provide: an evaluation of the research activity within the university since the early 1980s; a description of the process of establishing an organisational unit responsible for transferring research results to the productive sector; a description of the background and the process through which the CIT was established; an outline of the organisation and substantive activities of the CIT from 1985 to 1994; an overview of the most significant results obtained during CIT's first ten years of operation; and, the author's interpretation of the overall experience, its social impact, the cultural changes introduced, the lessons learned, and future directions.
