The Committee for Economic Development (CED) is an independent research and policy organisation. Its purpose is to propose policies that promote economic growth, increased productivity, better living standards, equal opportunity and an improved quality of life for all citizens of the United States (US). This statement addresses the role that older workers should play in the future workforce of the US. The report suggests that the ageing of the American population and a trend towards early retirement will create a shortage in the labour market. Recommendations are made to ensure that older workers have the opportunity to be active and productive members of the workforce of the future. The first chapter examines why it is important to promote longer working lives for American workers and the second chapter investigates barriers to work for older workers. The final chapter contains policy recommendations for promoting longer, productive working lives. It addresses important issues such as financial incentives, training, work organisation, recruiting and job placement, and accommodating disability in the workplace.
