Opportunities for linkages in vocational education and training: what are the knowledge demands for a global economy?: a comparative study between Australia and Japan

This paper presents the results of interviews and visits to relevant schools, colleges, universities and government organisations which form part of the Japanese vocational education system. It also includes results from interviews, visits and a survey with relevant government organisations, schools and colleges located within the Australian vocational education system. The Australian and Japanese vocational education and training (VET) systems are described. The future demands in the VET sectors are identified as well as those future demands which are not being met. Linkages, joint venture and exchange opportunities between Australian and Japanese institutions are explored. This paper summarises the key findings of a research report which investigated opportunities for linkages in VET between Australia and Japan. The 'Knowledge Nation' of the future relies on productive connections and interactions between schools, colleges and universities, the government and private sectors, research institutes and industry. It is important also to explore how these can be achieved from a global perspective using Japan as a comparative study.
