U3A Online: using the Internet to cognitively challenge isolated older people

U3A Online is the first virtual University of the Third Age (U3A) for isolated older people. Courses are written and led by retired people, principally for third agers who are isolated by distance or circumstance from taking part in face-to-face, cognitively stimulating activities. In 1999 a telephone and written evaluation of pilot courses focused on the characteristics, aspirations and perceptions of the impact of learning online by participants. Additional findings were obtained two years later. This paper discusses the findings of both studies and the potential of the Internet for enriching the quality of life experienced by isolated older people.
