This paper draws on work carried out to examine the future of the professions in the United Kingdon (UK). The paper discusses the nature of professionalism in relation to key dimensions of knowledge and responsiveness. It also considers some of the key factors that are threatening professional status in the modern era and examine how the professions are responding to such factors. A range of possible scenarios for the professions is then presented based on the key dimensions of tacit and codified knowledge and the orientation of a profession to the forces of change.
