- Think business transaction for SWL success: the business transaction model and stakeholder perspectives in structured workplace learning
-
This article suggests that a large portion of the literature on structured workplace learning (SWL) is conducted from the perspective of educational institutions, leaving a need for the perspectives of industry partners to be included. It describes a study reported in 'The role of small enterprise in school students' workplace learning' (TD/TNC 68.15) which explores the impact of SWL on key stakeholders in the area of small business. The article then develops a business transaction model, where all sectors (school, business and community) have a role to play. Two themes run through this model: the importance of the development of enterprise skills, attitudes and abilities in young people and the role of small businesses in this development; and the movement of young people from one method of learning (school-based) to an adult learning methodology and the role of stakeholders in this transition.

This publication reports on a research study which had the aims of investigating current practices in school-small enterprise links, examining the current literature in relation to structured workplace learning (SWL), identifying issues and common themes, developing an integrated theoretical framework for SWL and making suggestions regarding future directions. The research involved a review of the literature and structured interviews with owners, managers and staff of small enterprises, principals and senior staff of schools, vocational education and training (VET) practitioners in schools and TAFE, community organisations and Year 11 and 12 students in two states, New South Wales (NSW) and South Australia (SA). The report describes the methodology of the study, provides a review of the literature, summarises the interviews, offers exemplars of good practice and a theoretical framework for SWL and concludes with implications for future development.
