Flexibility and questions of ‘place’ in further education

This colloquium paper explores questions about the significance of place in relation to notions of flexibility in the context of further education in the United Kingdom (UK). It begins with a brief explanation of key ideas from recent thinking about social space in order to consider ways in which a focus on concepts of space and place might help to expand and illuminate thinking about the meanings and effects of flexibility in further education. The paper concludes with a critical appraisal of the extent to which the spatial concepts employed in this analysis help to enhance understanding of the discourses of flexibility in further education.
