The Adult Education Survey 1995 on participation in adult education and training in Finland was jointly undertaken by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Statistics Finland with a contribution of financing data from the Ministry of Labour. Two previous surveys were carried out in 1980 and 1990. The subject of the survey was the permanent Finnish population aged between 18 and 64 years of age, numbering 3.2 million in 1995. Over five thousand candidates were randomly selected from this population as the sample group and data was collected by personal interviews. This report is based on the data collected in the 1995 survey. It provides: an introduction to adult education in Finland and the survey; a description of participation in adult education in 1995; recent trends in participation; participation in job- or occupation-related and employer-sponsored adult education (adult education and training relating to hobbies or leisure activities are not a focus); self-directed studies; perceived benefits, interest and motives for participation; obstacles to participation in adult education and the available information about training opportunities; and a technical report on the survey. The report includes a guide to definitions, classifications and statistical figures, and appendices containing statistical data from the survey and the questionnaire administered to survey participants.
