Group training has been a key feature of the Australian apprenticeship and traineeship system for more than two decades. This publication looks at the development of group training, examines briefly recent growth in group training, employer size, the occupational base, the structure of group training, characteristics of group training apprentices and trainees, the location of group training apprentices and trainees, off-the-job training undertaken, completion and attrition and outcomes from group training of apprentices and trainees.

This report provides statistical information comparing funded group training companies with non-funded group training companies and all group training companies in total. Group training has broadened its occupational base since the mid 1990s and maintains a strong trade-based focus. The report looks at statistics and characteristics relevant to apprenticeships and traineeships being offered by group training companies. The analysis summarised here only considers apprenticeships and traineeships for the financial year 2000.
