This working paper focuses mainly on the social dimension of globalisation and explores some of the implications for vocational education and training (VET) and for VET research. The author begins by emphasising the need for two forms of leadership in VET: the leadership role of VET practitioners; and the leadership role within society of the VET system as a whole. The leadership role of VET practitioners and how this has to change to suit their role as knowledge-creators in these new times is discussed. The leadership role played by the VET system as a whole is examined. However, it is suggested that both VET practitioners and the VET system as a whole need to make more conscious efforts to lead along the social dimension of globalisation.
