In the United Kingdom (UK) further education (FE) sector, there is increasing emphasis on student-centred learning rather than teaching and this has implications for the importance of libraries in FE colleges. As FE institutions and their libraries/learning resources departments grow, librarians are expected to demonstrate new strategies for measuring the impact of their services. The papers in this collection provide a number of illustrative examples of performance measurement strategies. The papers are: Counting what counts: performance measurement in FE library and learning resources services / Roddie Shepherd; Quantification and innovation in FE libraries / Ann-Marie Warrender; Performance management in FE libraries: a view from West Herts College / Andrew Bragg and Judy Newton-Davies; The use of management information in an FE college library / Collette Xavier (slides from presentation only); Benchmarking in academic libraries / Claire Creaser; Library and learning resources in further education / William Wallace (paper not available; relevant information supplied by the Library Association is included in its place); Surveys for FE and HE library users / Kim Greenfield; Academic library surveys / Galen Ives. An appendix contains user satisfaction questionnaires.
