This study's point of departure is the issue of why enterprises invest in vocational training activities. The author begins with an empirical analysis of the situation of the training market that takes into account a number of parameters, including enterprise size, region and economic sector. This is followed by an examination of secondary determinants of enterprise training behaviour, i.e. economic, legislative and political factors. The chapter dedicated to a cost-benefit analysis of vocational training analyses the primary factors that shape the training behaviour of enterprises. The author then evaluates theoretical models for explaining enterprise training behaviour. The basis of the latter assessment is human capital theory. The study concludes with recommendations for further research in this area.
