The timeline traces the development of the system of vocational training in the 20th century with an emphasis on trade and industry. It is organised into the following periods: Whilhelmine Era, Weimar Republic, National Socialism, Occupation, Federal Republic of Germany (until 14 August 1969), German Democratic Republic (until 2 October 1990) and Federal Republic of Germany (post 3 October 1990). The handbook includes primarily information of national relevance: important laws and government acts; resolutions of parliamentary committees; decrees, statements and activities of public institutions; and associations of various economic, vocational and other organisations as well as unions and teachers' associations. Sources evaluated in putting together the handbook include: legal registries, parliamentary and other government publications, specialist journals, publications of associations, yearly reports and monographs.
