The authors examine a range of issues including: the expectations placed on the education system in Germany, the current state of the education system and existing problems and emerging solutions for reforming schools, vocational training, higher education and continuing vocational training. The introduction presents the main areas, participants, structures, conflicts and challenges relating to the education system and education policy in Germany. The focus is on analyses of the four main sub-areas comprising the German education system: the school system, vocational training, higher education and continuing vocational training. The analyses are followed by considerations of the transformation of the education system in the former [German Democratic Republic] GDR and current changes facing education policy in Germany's eastern federal states. The appendix contains documents pertaining to all of the educational areas which provide more information on the problems and trends discussed in the main section of the report.
