Vocational skills are not only acquired in schools that are part of the public education system, but also in private schools. These 'supplementary schools' are geared closely to the needs of the labour market; their curricula are also oriented toward current developments in business and industry technology. The brochure provides information on the potential, spheres of activity and objectives of private schools. The author presents the legal framework governing private schools (alternative schools, supplementary schools), the status of private vocational schools (full-time vocational schools, technical colleges), individual financial aid for pupils at such schools and the legal basis of private schools in the individual federal states in Germany. All of the private schools organised within the Association of German Private Schools (Bundesverband Deutscher Privatschulen) are listed, with names, addresses, training program objectives, duration of training, final examinations and financial aid opportunities.
