Changes in social capital and school-to-work-transitions

This article aims to explore the changes in social capital in the form of social networks across two generations of male school leavers in New Zealand. The focus is on the job finding methods of eleven male students and their fathers and is based on data drawn from semi-structured interviews. The article describes the experiences of social networks and employments of the fathers and sons and concludes that the social networks available to the sons have declined in quality and are less effective in facilitating school-to-work transitions. This has made it more difficult for poorly qualified school leavers to find jobs and has increased the risk and uncertainty in school-to-work transitions. There is now greater reliance on training programs financed by the State to link school leavers with employers.
