Perceptions of vocational education and competence: implications for research, policy and practice: a comparative study between Australia and Japan

This chapter presents the results of a comparative survey of Australian and Japanese vocational education and training (VET) sectors. The survey is based on interviews and visits to schools, colleges, universities and government organisations, and respondents to the survey include Japanese and Australian students and policymakers. Strategies are put forward towards establishing links between the VET sectors in the two countries, with the main aim being to increase Australia's market share of the Japanese vocational education market. The results show that both Australians and Japanese lack understanding of the other's VET system. The study also showed that although the Japanese have a commitment to lifelong learning within a company, they do not have a good understanding of vocational competence. They did, however, indicate interest in learning more about the system through collaborative research.
