Foundation degrees: a helpful vocational option?

This personal view suggests that Foundation Degrees have the potential to be a helpful vocational option, especially perhaps for students from lower socio-economic groups who have not readily entered universities. This will only be actualised if potential students and employees alike accept the Foundation Degree. The evidence for this, at least to date, is not convincing. Attention is drawn to the rather rhetorical feel of much contemporary policy. In contrast to such socially derived policy, the more overtly economic basis of Foundation Degrees is welcomed. It is suggested that Foundation Degrees require a revision in terms of the replacement of key skills by liberal education. Furthermore, there needs to be flexibility in the way that any guidelines are realised. Finally, it is suggested that what is appropriate for Foundation Degrees is unlikely to be suitable for the whole university arena.
