This paper examines the application of the Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) indexes in vocational education and training (VET) equity policy. It argues that general indexes of socio-economic disadvantage may be of limited use in the case of VET in Australia and suggests for the inclusion of 'area' disadvantage in determining what policies can be effective in countering the effects of socio-economic disadvantage on post-school participation. It explores the concept and application of the SEIFA indexes in the VET context which includes the problems of applying SEIFA.
