Following the introduction of the Washington Educational Reform Act of 1993, colleges and universities were required to develop new standards to improve teacher training programs. The first of these new standards was in the area of vocational teacher training. This article looks at one approach to improving technology teacher education: a competency-based program which was implemented at Western Washington University (WWU). The article covers: the development of instructional strategies; the development and identification of instructional resources; the development of assessment strategies; the management of the instructional process; and the evaluation of program effectiveness.
