In recent years, the term 'work-based learning' (WBL) has featured prominently in education and training literature. However, it is not clearly defined and is interpreted in different ways by education and training organisations and practitioners. In this paper, the author identifies the reasons why educational institutions involved in work related learning have become interested in WBL and the various conceptualisations of WBL. The paper concludes by proposing how the various conceptions of WBL will affect the work of vocational education and training practitioners in Technical and Further Education (TAFE).
