Open and distance learning in the developing world

This monograph provides a critical analysis of the progress of open and distance education (ODE) in developing countries. Its use for basic and non-formal education, schooling, teacher education and higher education is reviewed and illustrated by case studies of programs operating in a range of countries. The author discusses the development of distance education in the areas of non-formal education for adults, in schools, and in higher education, its cost, the impact of new technology and globalisation, and the reasons why distance education has been supported by government and what they hope to gain from it. In conclusion, the author evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of distance education as a means of teaching and learning.
