This monograph presents a critical analysis of definitions of informal learning with a focus on its use in a range of workplace contexts. The author examines the rhetoric encompassing the idea of informal learning to encourage debate on the uses of informal learning in workplaces and efforts to identify it through competency-based standards. The book features a discussion of theories of informal learning, contemporary corporate language, and the implications of poststructuralist and postmodern perspectives for accounts of workplace learning. It includes case studies which draw upon interviews with managers and human resource management (HRM) practitioners, and a glossary of key concepts and issues. The chapters are as follows: What is informal learning in the workplace?; Theorising informal learning; Work as a learning environment: unmasking the language of HRD; The hidden curriculum of learning at work; Professional identity and self-regulation at work; The performativity principle in informal learning; Retheorising informal workplace learning; Doubts about postmodern doubt: postscript.
