Employability and employers: the missing piece of the jigsaw

In the labour market of the 1990s, 'employability' has been convoked as the means by which employees and organisations can adapt to changing employment and economic conditions, and countries can maintain and improve their competitiveness. This report offers a definition of the concept of employability and builds upon it a framework for action by employers. The research explored the involvement and motivation of employers in developing the employability of their staff, the strategies adopted, their practical application, and the extent of their impact. The report contains sections covering the research objectives and methodology, the definition of employability, employer strategies and a framework describing their common features, the factors motivating employers to enhance staff employability and their impact on policy and practice, and a model for putting employability policy into practice.
