This paper discusses the roles four community colleges play in the economic development of their communities. These four colleges, in Ireland, Denmark, California and Mississippi, each specialise in the skills and knowledge needed by local industry and the regional economy. By allying themselves with businesses, they receive equipment, financial support, and access to industry-specific knowledge. In return, businesses gain advice and highly productive employees.
