An exploratory examination of changing perceptions of careership: the implications for the management of the continuing professional development of teachers

Changes in the social and political culture are reshaping attitudes towards career development, and personal development is gaining precedence over organisational development. This chapter examines whether self-development is in conflict with professional development, and an exploratory survey of new teachers indicates that schools constrain rather than facilitate their professional development.
