Higher education courses in the community: issues around guidance and learning support for non-traditional students

This chapter looks at the relationship between the goals of community education, educational guidance and higher education. The author suggests that there is a need to bridge the gap between the flexible aspects of facilitated community learning and the more formalised support mechanisms of institutional systems.

Employer involvement in lifelong learning

This chapter examines employer involvement in adult and continuing education which began in the 1980s. The author attempts to provide possible reasons for this involvement which, she says, is set to continue. The author further argues that the United Kingdom has still a long way to go in developing a truly inclusive learning society and questions the wisdom of the Government's desire to have employers at the heart of this development.

Towards a learning society: the role of formal, non-formal and informal learning

The focus of this chapter is on the range of learning available to adults in order to better understand their contribution to a learning society and is based on research carried out in Northern Ireland. The terms 'lifelong learning' and 'the learning society' as well as 'learning' and 'education', are examined and working definitions for these are suggested. The author argues that statutory education bodies are only one form of adult education provision and that there are other opportunities for adults to engage in both planned and unplanned learning, all of which also play important roles in promoting a 'learning society'.

Identity, risk and lifelong learning

In this chapter, the contemporary role of adult education is examined and the key features of postmodernity and the accompanying contemporary socio-economic and cultural changes which are impacting on the educational scene are highlighted. The author argues that changing conceptions of knowledge and the need to understand knowledge in terms of its location in different social practices mean that lifelong learning also needs to be viewed differently. Lifelong learning, he argues, is not simply a structure of provision, but needs to be understood in terms of its significations i.e. the meanings it has and the meanings it gives. Consequently, practitioners of adult education need to rethink their conceptions of adult learning and their role as institutional providers of such learning.

In this chapter, the contemporary role of adult education is examined and the key features of postmodernity and the ...  Show Full Abstract

Adult education with theological reflection: a multi-disciplinary approach through open learning

The focus of this chapter is on designing an adult education masters program for adult educators working in specifically Christian contexts. It covers the changing philosophy of adult education in universities and how such a development combines with trends towards a postmodernist culture. A discussion of issues arising from the mode of delivery of the program through open learning is included.

Degrees of adult participation: lifelong learning in European universities

The demands of the post-industrial society are leading to changes in European universities, forcing many to open their doors and establish partnerships at regional and national levels with industry and other organisations and agencies. This has raised questions about the purpose of universities and who universities are for as well as the nature of their role in relation to lifelong learning in a learning society. This chapter examines the concept of lifelong learning in European universities and uses examples from three European countries.

Lifelong learning: stretching the discourse

The author argues that the current context of adult education theory, policy and practice exacerbates the problem of continuing social polarisation with the discourse of lifelong learning becoming disconnected from the discourse of social purpose adult education. The author hopes that the New Labour government's professed interest in education may offer the opportunity to extend the discourse of lifelong learning and the learning society to reflect the values of traditional society where education was an integral part in the struggle for democracy and social justice.

An exploratory examination of changing perceptions of careership: the implications for the management of the continuing professional development of teachers

Changes in the social and political culture are reshaping attitudes towards career development, and personal development is gaining precedence over organisational development. This chapter examines whether self-development is in conflict with professional development, and an exploratory survey of new teachers indicates that schools constrain rather than facilitate their professional development.
