Towards a learning society: the role of formal, non-formal and informal learning

The focus of this chapter is on the range of learning available to adults in order to better understand their contribution to a learning society and is based on research carried out in Northern Ireland. The author argues that statutory education bodies are only one form of adult education provision and that there are other opportunities for adults to engage in both planned and unplanned learning, all of which also play important roles in promoting a 'learning society'.
