The Assessment of Prior Learning (APL) or the Assessment of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) is an approach to assessment which identifies learning from past experience as a basis for progressing to new learning programs and was used in the 1980s to enable mature students to return to learning by crediting learning gained through social experience and work. The early initiatives focused on the learning which resulted from experience and not the experience itself. This chapter looks at the relationship between the learning experience and how it influences the assessment of learning outcomes.
