This chapter maps some of the assumptions underpinning the focus on lifelong learning by examining the United Kingdom government's 1998 Green Paper, The Learning Age. The chapter argues that the new age of lifelong learning is itself a manifestation of a certain 'new age' culturist debate where affect is displaced by rigour in the construction of the policy. This is examined in the context of some of the contemporary changes in employment and work, and a parallel is drawn between the culturist harnessing of attitudes through lifelong learning to the goal of a learning society and those to be found in measures to develop learning organisations. The author concludes that the new age debate furthers a culture of lifelong (l)earning wherein earning and learning are increasingly merged.
