This chapter begins by focusing on the structural forces that are creating a prison overcrowding crisis in Canada, the single most important condition affecting adult education in prisons today, and the reasons prisoners, in the main, lack basic skills of literacy and numeracy as well as the skills necessary to get and keep a job. A strategy is examined involving adult education that is used to manage that crisis. Finally, the contradictions that limit the effectiveness of the strategy are discussed and possibilities suggested for realising an alternative approach for prison education.
