Processes of transition in education systems

This collection of papers is based on research undertaken in 1995 into the stages through which education systems pass in countries moving from authoritarian to democratic forms of government. From the research, a model based on variable movement (in terms of time) from one stage to another, was developed and has been used in the papers included in this book. In each paper the model is applied to processes of educational transition which can be observed in the quite different contexts of each country. The chapters are: Introduction: processes of educational transition in countries moving from authoritarian rule to democratic government / Elizabeth A. McLeish; The process of educational transition in the school system of South Africa / Julia Bekker; Current developments in education in Latvia: difficulties of renewal / Natasha Kersh; The process of educational transition with particular reference to schooling in the new Bundeslander / Elizabeth A. McLeish; The transformation of East German teacher education / Nina Arnhold; Reforming or conforming?: the case of the Gesamtschule in post-1989 educational reform in Eastern Germany / Stephanie Wilde.
