This chapter looks at changes in formal education in the South Pacific with specific reference to the impact of development and change in Tonga. Key issues covered include aims and objectives of education; curriculum development; access and equity; assessment, examination and educational achievement; and cultural and social impacts. The effect of globalisation on education and change in the Pacific Rim is discussed. With education becoming a vehicle to promote economic growth, the author points out the importance of keeping a balance between education for cultural development and education for economic development.
