This chapter outlines some of the major tensions that are surrounding education in the USA and analyses the conservative social movements that are impacting educational policy and practice. The four major parties of this new conservative alliance are the neo-liberals, the neo-conservatives, the Authoritarian Populists and the Professional New Middle Class. Each has its own relatively autonomous history and dynamics, but together, Apple suggests, they can overcome their internal contradictions and succeed in radically transforming education policy and practice.
