This issue focuses on lifelong learning in European universities and presents the first set of results of an interdisciplinary European research project, whose general aim is to identify and analyse the extent and nature of the involvement of European universities in lifelong learning. Articles in this issue are: Lifelong learning and higher education: the Swedish case / Berit Asking and Rita Foss-Fridlizius; Policies for lifelong learning and for higher education in Norway: correspondence or contradiction? / Ellen Brandt; The status of lifelong learning in German universities / Bettina Alesi and Barbara M. Kehm; Lifelong learning in French universities: the state of the art / Jean-Pierre Jallade; Lifelong learning in Spanish universities: the market inside the public system / Jose-Gines Mora and Javier Vidal; Lifelong learning and the universities in Greece: the state of the art / Nikos Kokosalakis; Lifelong learning in the UK / Maurice Kogan; National assessments: underlying cultural values revealed by comparing English and French national tests / Claire Planel, Patricia Broadfoot, Marilyn Osborn, Keith Sharpe and Brigitte Ward. In general, the articles seem to show that there is no explicit strategy for lifelong learning adopted by the universities at a national level, let alone at the European level. The universities, however, seem to be responding to socio-economic developments and are very sensitised to the need for developing employment-relevant courses.
