The career centre at Auckland University of Technology offers a range of services intended to empower students and external clients to exercise informed career choices, pursue appropriate educational pathways and realise their career goals. This career centre is unique for several reasons: (a) initial funding is by a partnership between Auckland University of Technology management, the students' association, and a corporate sponsor, McDonald's Family Restaurants; (b) it is a centre of teaching where career lecturers are also in practice as career counsellors; and (c) it has strong links to University programs with components of work-based experience. Services are broader than the traditional provision of course advice for new students and some graduate job placement. Ideally students are associated with the career centre throughout their time at Auckland University of Technology. The career centre has flourished financially as well as professionally because of a broad focus on vocational aspects of education rather than a narrow focus as a business unit. The innovative nature of the centre reflects one positive organisational response of a recreated university to a dynamic educational and employment context.
