Caseloading

Since the incorporation of further education (FE) colleges in 1993, caseloading has been an area of focus for development in the FE sector in the United Kingdom. College managers have been seeking new ways to deploy their valuable human resources and caseloading appears to provide an innovative way to ensure maximum flexibility and productivity from staff. The method comprises two strands of development. Caseloading refers to staff, either individually or as team members, taking responsibility for managing caseloads of students with resources they themselves deploy. Workloading is a method used to ensure balanced individual workloads. This publication reports on the experiences of nine FE colleges in developing and implementing their own models of caseloading and workloading. Two of these colleges participated in a Further Education Development Agency (FEDA) project to evaluate their models of caseloading in relation to its effect on curriculum delivery, staff attitudes and motivation, productivity and efficiency. The experiences of these two colleges are described in more detail in this report.
