Student tracking involves the collection and use of information relating to individual students and their educational progress at all stages throughout their contact with an educational institution. This information is important for curriculum development, management, administrative and funding purposes, and is most effective if linked to the central management information system of an educational institution. This report describes the operation of student tracking systems and their significance in the further education (FE) sector in the United Kingdom. Information is provided about the software and systems available and the organisations able to offer advice and support. Guidance is provided for college staff in defining college needs, auditing current procedures, facilitating cooperation between staff, specifying systems and software, and promoting integration of information within the college's overall information system.
