Providing training to meet the needs of industry and business has always been a major objective of further education (FE) colleges in the United Kingdom. In order to become more responsive to the needs of industry and business in the current economic environment, many colleges are developing new capabilities to enable them to deliver company-specific training. This guide for colleges provides a rationale for increased responsiveness and presents case studies illustrating a variety of innovative approaches. It makes recommendations for colleges to consider when developing training for industry/business. Advice is provided on managing the interface between the college and industry, establishing and maintaining partnerships with industry, enhancing flexibility and responsiveness, staffing, curriculum development and National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) development. An industry links audit is included as a tool to assist colleges in assessing their responsiveness and to develop actions plans for improvement.
