As email, the World Wide Web (WWW) and videoconferencing are becoming more and more familiar in daily life, the question of whether their use will also be commonplace in the way teaching and learning activities occur in education and training organisations is examined. The results of a survey of 550 people involved with education and training organisations in 41 countries are reported. Six sets of conclusions that are consistent over national boundaries are drawn from the following questions: even though these people already make personal use of email and the WWW, why do they use or not use these tools for specific learning-related purposes within courses; what use will be made of a tool such as videoconferencing, which is not yet commonplace as a personal tool; will videoconferencing ever make a breakthrough for teaching and learning?
