Using authentic assessment in vocational education

With the use of cognitive educational approaches, teaching is immersed in real-world contexts where students participate in knowledge construction. Authentic assessments require students to apply their skills and knowledge to finding solutions to real problems. This publication examines various aspects of authentic assessment in relation to its use in vocational education. The first section provides an overview of the publication and definitions of terminology associated with assessment. The following sections contain a discussion of the theoretical foundations of authentic assessment, an investigation of research on its value and effectiveness in promoting learning, and a description of strategies and tools for assessing learning, including those that students can use for self assessment, and federal and state initiatives for using authentic assessment on a large scale.
