This workshop aims to analyse critically outreach policy and provision in adult continuing higher education, by attempting to identify the political and social values which frame and inform policy on outreach initiatives. Outreach work in adult continuing higher education is aimed at widening participation in the sector and embedding this work in institutions' conventional provision. However, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) funding frameworks for higher education provision may not always support these outreach initiatives, which can find themselves in unforseen dilemmas in attempting to deliver their project objectives. This workshop examines these issues, particularly in relation to the Fenland Oral History Project and Third Age Rural Project, run through the Board of Continuing Education at the University of Cambridge with funding from the HEFCE Widened Provision initiative in the United Kingdom (UK).
