European universities: how accessible are they for adults?

This paper focuses on the early findings of a comparative research project funded by the European Union (EU) under the Targeted Socio-Economic Research (TSER) program on the access of nontraditional adults to higher education in the United Kingdom (UK), the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Spain and Sweden. Drawing on the research findings, the paper discusses what makes a university accessible for adults and to what extent recent concern with lifelong learning in Europe has resulted in widening participation. Key concepts such as social inclusion, non-traditional and adult students will also be outlined within the framework of different European cultural contexts.
