This report is based on collaborative research carried out by Coopers & Lybrand and Investors in People UK in August 1996. The researchers surveyed company Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), employees and people in the 16-25 year age range who had yet to enter into the labour market fully, on their attitudes towards the world of work and the changes taking place in it. The research examined the following areas: the outlook and expectations of CEOs, employees, and those about to enter the labour market about the future world of work; the differences in the attitudes of these three groups; the relationship between employers' business and human resource development (HRD) strategies; the most significant HRD issues for employers; their HRD strategies and how they measure their effectiveness; the performance of CEOs in the area of HRD; employee perceptions of a good employer; and lessons from organisations in which both employers and employees believe that people are managed effectively. The report presents the findings in these areas and identifies areas that need to be addressed. An appendix describes the research methodology and survey results.
