Ko E Ako 'A E Kakai Pasifika: education for Pacific Islands people

This paper discusses the Ministry of Education's vision to provide a world class education system with a lifelong learning context for Pacific Islands people. It outlines the Ministry of Education's vision, focusing on the development of quality teachers, quality programs, quality environments and quality systems. This vision is aimed at provision of lifelong education and training that is flexible and responsive both to the needs of people and the needs of the New Zealand economy. The Ministry's aim is to break the cycle of disadvantage through expansion of early childhood education, improvement of school environments, increasing support for those with special needs and development of anti-truancy programs. It also aims to continue to improve core schooling through the development and implementation of the New Zealand curriculum, increasing teacher supply and fairer distribution of funding. Finally, the Ministry aims to meet the needs of the changing world of work through implementation of the industry skills strategy and the National Qualifications Framework. This paper also outlines the key recommendations from 'Challenging success, developing Pacific Islands education in Aotearoa, New Zealand', the first report to provide an overview of Pacific Islands education.
