This paper discusses the likely increase in assessment of prior learning with the implementation of National Qualifications Framework (NQF), particularly with the high number of adults enrolling in further training and education. In New Zealand there is a growing movement for the recognition of employees' skills and competence by industries. As the framework develops many of these skills will end up being registered on the National Qualification Framework as unit standards. As employers place more emphasis on competence, the need for an assessment system that is flexible enough to cover the range of knowledge, skills and attitudes covered by unit standards and to suit the range of delivery modes, learning styles and needs of learners becomes even more important. In this paper the author examines Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) looks at how RPL works in relation to the Framework and discusses the implications of RPL for Pacific Islands people.
