Teacher education: implications for Pacific students and their communities

This paper has been jointly prepared to outline current provisions for Pacific Islands students at the Auckland College of Education (ACE). The author discuss how these provisions relate to the wider socio-economic and political contexts within which changes to the tertiary sector of education and training are occurring. The agendas are ostensibly about flexibility and choice, but the authors aim to ascertain whether these are leading to empowerment for students and the Pacific Islands communities in New Zealand. Despite an increase in the range of provisions for Pacific Islanders students at Auckland College of Education, achievement levels are still a matter of concern. The authors ask whether these provisions, plus the new competitive environment, will address the current positioning or whether present inequalities will simply be reproduced? They examine this question in the light of combined experience, over many years, as Pacific Islands tertiary educators and in the discussion and conclusion they suggest a strategy which may assist in this process.
